Happy 2009!

My sister graduates from high school this year, you know. She’s so clever. She’s also finished her first pair of socks, without any help at all from me except that I told her she could start the heel anywhere she wanted to. Which she was pleased with. She didn’t even need help with kitchenering the toe, which gains her extra knitter points in my book.

But yes! I know it’s already 2 weeks into January, but there’s 50 more weeks of the year! So here’s what I’m up to right now.

Baudelaire socks
Baudelaire socks for the SKA Sockdown! January theme of a pattern from an online magazine. I’m knitting them in Dream in Color Smooshy in “Lunar Zazzle” from Lovelyarns, and they’re very nice. I think the first one is a little too tall, so I may rip and reknit the cuff after I finish sock number 2, but I’m very content working on these. They knit up pretty quickly.

I seem to be in a mitten phase right now, even though I don’t much care about mittens. I finished a pair of charity mittens for the Lovelyarns school charity project, whereupon the knitters are trying to knit mittens for each of the 250some kids at a local elementary school.

school charity mittens

I knit these in a day, January 7th to the 8th, and gave them back to Sue on the 8th. I used some unidentified blue and gray/black/blue yarn, using the jogless striping technique that made it look all streamlined and sexy. They’re very cute mittens, and I hope “M.S.” enjoys them.

In my hands at this moment is the mate to a mitten that my mom knit a long (unidentified) time ago. Her birthday is in a few days, and when I found this mitten I wanted it to have a mate! The mitten fits me almost perfectly, but it fits her better except for its length. So the plan is to knit the second mitten to length, and then pick up, snip, and reknit the second mitten top to match.

The mitten saga

The problem with the first mitten is that it was knit flat and seamed from the top to the cuff, so I can’t just take out the top and rip back and knit it up again. I actually do have to cut it off and knit up again. I can’t decide yet whether I’m going to reknit mitten #1 flat or in the round. Knitting it flat would be in keeping with the rest of the mitten, but knitting it round would be easier. I’ll see once I get there what works better.

First Silk Mitten

It’s such a pretty mitten! It’s soft too: the yarn is a wool/silk blend, Schachenmayr Nomota “Saskia”. Shiny and pretty!

The last thing in the works at the moment is mom’s sweater. Remember how we knit it too large?

Princess Sweater remnants

Well I frogged it, measured my mum, and cast on for a smaller size. Here’s hoping my sister gets in on this too, and that it fits this time.

There are a few other things that are waiting for my attention again. The Swirly Mittens from the previous post are on hold. The fabulous champer from Ravelry is sending me a full skein of Silky Wool in the black I need. I’m so grateful! She rocks. The Monkey socks are waiting until I’ve freed up a US2 again. I was going to start the second one when I’d finished the first Baudelaire sock, but I finished B when I was in a place without the yarn for the Monkeys, so I just moved on with the Baudelaires. Once they’re done, though, the Monkeys are going to be back in action. And of course the long ignored but never forgotten Sock Yarn Blanket is waiting for me at school, for when I need both simple knitting and to get rid of remnants. It’ll always be there; no hurry.

I don’t have a lot of goals for 2009. I want to knit up my sock yarn stash, to the extreme. I don’t want to buy a lot of yarn for now, so I’m going to try to only knit from the stash unless disaster strikes and I absolutely have to buy yarn. =P No but really, I want to knit up some of those socks I have planned. The Playwright wants a pair, for example, and I have just the thing. Also I have a sweater I want to design and knit, and enough laceweight for two shawls. My objective is to stash dive!

Oh and Rowan thinks he’s a person.

Rowan = people

I’m going to miss these boys so much!

oh dear

Hello blog (blowing the dust off).  I haven’t forgotten about you, I swear.  It’s only that I’ve been very busy with school and everything, lots of knitting, etc, but not a lot of time to take pictures of things.  You understand.  Most of the time now I’m out and about from 8 until 4, and by 4 the light’s all gone and my room’s getting dark.

But as it is, I am still knitting, lots and lots.  I’ve got most of my Christmas knitting done, and I’m working on the last two gifts for my immediate family (omg!).  I’d show you my dad’s socks now, but I forgot to take a picture of those today, so I’ll take it tomorrow and promise to come back and show.  He’s seen them, already, and tried them on, so that’s no secret.

The other gift is more secret, so that will have to wait.

I also gave DN and JP their Christmas presents, so perhaps I’ll get pictures of them in them tomorrow. DN says she lay in her bed last night wearing her mittens and watching Gossip Girl. She’s a bit strange.

However! I do have pictures of other things. Today I got my package from the Loopy Ewe which I ordered as a party for myself for finishing my novel in November (you might have noticed the little box in the corner over there).

Mountain Colors Targhee top
Mountain Colors Targhee roving (mom, I’m under the impression the wait list for the fiber processing is very long…)

LL sock Lakeview, China Blue
Four skeins of sock yarn, all Lorna’s Laces, in “Lakeview” (variegated) and “China Blue” (solid).

Also I started a pair of Monkey socks for myself (pair #3), and this one is not going to wander off because it’s in yarn that the Playwright got me in New York, and it is wonderful.

Rhythm n Blues monkeys

Finally for today, I have started (and half-completed) a cowl for a girl who I work with at the Arboretum. I’m knitting the Crofter’s Cowl (her choice) in Cascade 220 in a beautiful heathered teal (which I got from TLE). It looks bad in the dark light of my room, but it’s pretty, and she is very excited.

Crofter's Cowl

So for tomorrow! I need to do lots more photographing, but also lots of work, so we’ll see how that goes. Also this afternoon, while knitting, I finished “Post Captain,” and will probably start listening to “H.M.S. Surprise” tomorrow or Sunday.

FO: Seaflower Monkey

Look familiar?

Yarn: Dream in Color Smooshy in “Deep Seaflower”
Needles: US #2 dpns

Seaflower Monkey

These are pictures of my own feet, but I decided to give these to Molly for her 18th birthday (which was on Saturday).

She loves them, and I am quite happy. She’s wearing them today, and it’s nice to have someone outside my family (and ex-family-in-love) wearing my socks. They are beautiful socks, but I think I needed to let them go after they had taken me so long to knit them. Some day, I will have my own pair of Monkey socks, but for now I’m happy.

Seaflower Monkey

Now I can move on!

New Year’s Eve, 2007

2008 is going to be a big year for me. I’ll get into college in 2008. I’ll graduate from high school in 2008. I’ll leave the nest in 2008. I’ll live in a dorm in 2008. I’ll vote in 2008.

It feels good so far.

I’m not big on resolutions. I’m not good at keeping them. I’m going to stick to my 101 in 1001 list, because that’s a big list of goals over a longer period. I’m going to start working out more regularly, especially when my senior project starts and I have the extra time in the day.

But right now, my immediate goals are knitting goals. I want to finish my current projects, done, kaput, before starting anything else ambitious. I’m counting three projects I’ve not yet cast-on in this list.

Priority One:
DSCN1642
Molly’s mom’s fingerless mitts. They look finished, but I’m going to undo the bind off and knit them a lot longer. She bought these from me in late November, so I owe it to her to finish them pronto.

Priority Two:
zodiacBEAUTY2
Zodiac sleep sack for Maisie, promised to Kate at Christmas. I will knit this!
1745876832_b312ec83f1
Elefante stuffed toy for Liam. Also promised at Christmas.

Priority Three:
Rogue
The Rogue Cardi. I am in love with this sweater. I’m knitting the sleeves together, and I’m working on the body as well, because I have these grand bizarre plans in which I attach the sleeves right at the start of the sleeve cap and knit the shoulders all as one. We’ll see how it goes, but I’m approaching the critical time. The sleeves reach my elbows, and the body is approaching the armholes. I’m excited.

Priority Four:
Embossed Leaves
Sockdown socks! The first pair, my Embossed Leaves (Ravelry link) socks are under way. The first sock is approaching the heel, and it is beautiful. I’m knitting it in Crash Into Ewe’s Real Silver sock yarn in the colorway “Topaz.” Sue gave it to me for my birthday. It is stunning. These have to be finished by the end of January to qualify.

The second pair is one I have not started yet, but will cast on in the beginning of January. I’m knitting the Thelonious sock from Cookie A. in Sundara Yarn Sport Merino. Prettyyyy. I have to finish them by the end of February to qualify.

Priority Five:
Seaflower Monkey Sock
Seaflower Monkey socks. They’re almost 75% finished, and I’d like to get them done before it gets too warm to wear them. I started them in August.

Priority Six:
Qiviut Project. They were wrist warmers, but I decided the fabric needed to be fluffier and lacier. I’m thinking a cowl of sorts. With lace. Maybe feather and fan.

Priority Seven:
Mystery Stole
The Mystery Stole. I might rip it. I might keep knitting it. I really don’t know. Votes?

So there you are. That’s what I want to finish up.

Happy New Year! Much love to all.

I’m going to go move firewood.

Winter Break – and a Fingerless Mitten pattern

I swear there’s been knitting!

School just got out for break on Friday, with my last Holiday Concert! Ahh! Then I went to pick up J at his house (he’s not driving because he got his wisdom teeth out and is enjoying the effects of hydrocodone, yeaah), and took him home. We hung out for a while, then his parents came and got him to go to a movie, and I went to a Christmas-bring-your-grown-daughter party. It was a fun party, even though my mum decided the party started at 7, when it actually started at 7:30, and most people didn’t arrive until 8. Awkward. But fun! Mum and I got time to talk finally, which we haven’t done since like, Monday.

This week at school, I knitted feverishly to finish these:
Sam's gloves
and these:
Molly's mitts

Plz to forgive unattractive fingernails.

Also, I’ve gotten 10″ finished on the body of my Rogue cardigan:
Rogue side

It is beautiful! So soft and pretty.

And yesterday, I got to work on my Seaflower Monkey socks (which haven’t seen the light of day for like, ever). They are pretty, and I started the heel flap on the second pair.

Fingerless Mitten Pattern

So, the pattern for the mitts is totally made up. It goes like this (worked on 2 circs, possible on DPNs):

Cast on an even number of stitches (40 for Molly’s, 44 for Sam’s).
Knit in 2×2 ribbing for a couple of inches. Knit straight stockinette for another couple inches.
Begin thumb gusset increasing:
K1, m1, k1, place marker. Knit around to last 2 sts in round: place marker, k1, m1, k1.
Knit a plain round.
Every other round, increase once before the stitch just before the marker (easier to increase here than right at the marker).

Continue until thumb part seems somewhat outrageous (Sam’s is 24 stitches, Molly’s is probably 24 also).
On an increase round, knit to second marker, remove marker, k1, m1, stop. Leaving a fairly long tail, pick up new yarn (the other end of the ball) and knit the thumb stitches. Knit the front thumb stitches with the new yarn (before the m1; you’ll need that for the hand), and stop. With the yarn on the back of the mitt, knit the rest of the hand. You are now knitting the hand and thumb at the same time, as if you were doing two socks at once or something. I like to put the marker back in between hand and thumb so I don’t get the yarns switched, but after a couple of rows they divide and it’s hard to knit the thumb to the hand again after that.

Keep knitting straight for the hand (make sure you have the same number of stitches on the hand as you did before the thumb gusset started). Also knit the thumb straight, until it sits where you want it on your thumb (Sam’s is longer, closer to my thumbnail, and Molly’s sits at my thumb joint because she has smaller hands than I). Cast off thumb stitches. Keep knitting on hand until it reaches the desired length.

Cast off all stitches.

Weave in ends, sew up the hole at the thumb with the end of the thumb yarn. Yay!

Sam's gloves

And my birthday is tomorrow!

Pretty Day

Today was a pretty day. Cold outside, but that’s as it should be.

DSCN1414

I didn’t spend much (any) time outside, though, because my to-do list was long and demanding. This whole being a senior thing is rather strenuous. I can’t wait until I get to do something in the day and then not have to do homework about it in the evenings. I’m still working on my Anatomy Lab now, and it’s almost 8 PM.

Plus, it was house-cleaning day, so I had to vacuum and organize and tidy and things. My life is so interesting.

So it was mostly work, but we went this afternoon to see Antigone at BSF, which was nice, but also a Brecht translation of a Greek Tragedy, so pretty talk-y and kind of boring. Dramatic, but boring. I knit the whole time, and got most of my second Seaflower Monkey sock cuff done. OMG! Working on the monkey! Shocking!

Also, I bothered the mice. One of them died yesterday (I knew it was coming), so now I’m down to two, and they’re both a bit nuts. They’re very sweet though, and like the silly yogurt treats I give them.
Cookie's nose

DSCN1446
And here’s what I’ve been working on lately. The Woodins have a log, but I only have two critters totally finished, and need to knit a whole lot more before November 26th.

Also, the Nautie. Nearly ready for a head.
DSCN1418

Yeah, not a lot of knitting happened today, but I did find another ball of the blue Frog Tree Alpaca Sportweight that I need for dad’s socks, and they are on their way. Yay! Then I can finish the feet. And knit something else, finally.

Also, the Qiviut wristwarmers are in a revamp stage, wherein I rip them out because I’ve decided they aren’t fluffy enough for me to really enjoy the fluffy soft exotic yarn, and knit them at a larger gauge. Also, the Rogue sleeve is going to get frogged someday, because it’s too small for my taste. I want a boyfriend-like sweater. Something I can be snuggly in. Yay Malabrigo.

Summer of Socks 2007

Okay, so, I’m obviously shite at keeping up with KALs and forums and whatever whatever. I’m just not good at paying attention and playing along!

So Summer of Socks 2007 is ending on Friday, and I’ve done nothing. I didn’t post pictures of socks, I didn’t contact my blog writer (Dee, whom I should acknowledge), I didn’t enter any contests, I didn’t even get my sock-in-Spain pictures into the “best vacation picture” contest.

So here goes!

This summer, I knit:
The spring cable socks for Kevin! I started these before Spain, and finished them after Spain, but took them to Spain in the meantime.
DSCN0941

The Spring Cable cuff in the Alhambra:
Spain (170)

I also knit (and finished, but no pictures yet) the Saucy socks for Judy.
DSCN0939

Look, there it is being knit at the hotel in Spain!
Spain (279)

I knit a pair of Pomatomus socks for my sister’s birthday.
Pomatomus

I knit and ripped a Cookie A. Red Herring sock. The yarn is lovely, and from Spain, but it didn’t work out.
Blue herring

I knit one full Coupling sock from knitty.com. I haven’t knit the second one.
Coupling #1

I’ve knit half of one Monkey sock in Dream in Color. I love it.
Seaflower monkey!

I’m working on a pair of socks for J in Sockina Cotton, and it is soft and yummy and cotton-y. He wanted cotton socks.
boyfriend stockinette

And naturally I’m working on 5372953264364 other projects, but I will be participating in Socktoberfest, goddamnit! I have yarn I bought last year from Scout in the Socktoberfest colorway, and maybe I can get them knit into something. If I’ve finished my dad’s-socks-to-be. I’ve promised him socks for his birthday (Monday). Rawk.

I love starting things!

I have developed (for me) an astonishingly bad case of startitis. At this moment, regardless of hibernation or not, I have eight projects on the needles. Eight.

This is astounding.

I have finished knitting the Pomatomus socks (they don’t match, by about a quarter of a repeat). I now need to finish overdying them (not going well) so I can finally give them to my sister and maybe have them look decent.

I have also finished knitting (a long time ago) that felted notions bag that keeps hanging around. But I haven’t felted it. I didn’t feel like wasting the water. I don’t know.

But actually on my needles now are as follows:

0. Log cabin blanket. This one doesn’t count.
Log cabin

1. Qiviut wrist cuffs. I put these down because the yarn is very thin, and I’m knitting them on US 1s, and I just got tired. I’m nearly past the wrist ribbing part, and need to start increasing for the thumb gusset. I’m nearly to the interesting part! I should pick them up again before it gets real cold.

2. Mystery Stole 3. I’m through chart D, just started chart E. I like it, but I’ve been busy (sort of) in the last couple days, and lace knitting needs attention. I haven’t had much of an attention span lately.
Mystery Stole

3. Blue herring socks. Blah. I don’t know. I like the pattern, but I’m not sure I picked the right yarn. I’m working with the blue merino I got in Spain, as well as the brown camel, and the brown alpaca I also got in Spain. I wanted the alpaca to be in the foot part, so I know the camel in with the blue on the leg. The problem is the huge gauge difference between the camel and the alpaca. I had to change the heel to a flap heel to be able to decrease appropriately for the much larger and fluffier (but still sock weight) alpaca. It’s a bit of an engineering feat, knitting herringbone backwards. Anyway, they might pull together.
Blue Herring

4. Coupling socks. I like the yarn, but I’m not sure if it’s right for the pattern. It stripes in single row stripes, and the pattern is lacy and textured. They don’t quite mix well, but if I put the sock on it stretches out okay to show the lace. I’m almost done the first sock, so I might as well finish the pair.
Coupling

5. Monkey socks. I cast these on the other day for some reward knitting. I’ve hoarded the yarn for a few months (Dream in Color, yum) and wanted to make Monkey socks. They are beautiful. No reservations here.
Seaflower Monkey Sock

6. Stockinette boyfriend socks. They’re supposed to be a surprise. If he reads the blog they won’t be. Well, he knows I’m knitting them, just not when. I’m trying to knit both at once, just because, but I’m still unsure about the pattern. It’s self striping yarn, so it has to be simple, but it’s cotton, so it has no stretch. And I kind of don’t want to do ribbing the whole way, but I might have to.
Stockinette Boyfriend Socks

7. Baby hat. I cast this on because I was listening to a podcast (Damknit) in which Erin talked about knitting baby hats. I had some cotton/elastic in the stash, so I threw it on some size 5s and started knitting. So far so good. I wanted some instant gratification. Also, I might be able to give it to my aunt, who is due in November.
Baby hat

8. Yesterday evening, I cast on a scarf in Cascade 220, like I needed another project. I’ve started thinking about my Holiday Craft Show knitting, which I need to do so I can have stuff to sell. I will have some on display, not for sale, but I should have things for peoples to buy. Yes.
Green Scarf

I’ve also been spinning.
Mystery Bump, spun, with closer color

My mom and my sister have ADD. It runs in the family.

Later I teach a sock class! With luck, it’ll be outside, because it’s beautiful today.

I suppose…

an update would be appropriate? Let’s start at the top of my priority list!

Tomorrow, I have an AP European test. That is, the AP test itself. That is, the 3+ hour test that determines whether I get to place out of a history class in college. I do like history (why else take an AP course?), but I’d like to focus on the science, plzkthx. So, even though I don’t feel like I’ll do terrifically well, I’m still optimistic, because I don’t have to be AMAZING to get a 4 or so. I doubt a 5 is in my future, but I can try for a 4. It might work out.

Second on the list are my Monkey socks! I phoned Maeve last night and (very sneakily) asked her for her foot length. Did you know that the length from elbow to wrist is (generally) the same as the length of your foot? It’s true! So now I know her feet are about my size and I can knit this sock confidently. That said, I have already reached the toe decreases for the first sock and have already cast on the second (because I was waiting for her to call me back). This pattern is such a freakin’ awesome fast knit. Plus it’s beautiful, and this yarn is amazing. I love it.

The yarn, by the way, “Dusky Aurora”, is so beautiful. I picked it up thinking it was just a wine red, but these blues and greens and purples keep coming out under the red tone, and they are splendid.

Third, I have not bitten my nails for 24 days now, officially, which means they will be beautiful for prom! Yay! I might actually break this habit after all. I’ve tried everything, just FYI. Polish, nasty-tasting polish, band-aids, filing them, a rubber band on my wrist, a hypnotist. Everything. Now it’s pure conviction that’s getting me through. Irony? Maybe. But I’m doing it. My goal is 60 days, and then I get a prize (what, I don’t know). Go me! Look’it my 101 in 1001 page if you’re confused.

And just so you know, the $1.50 is not gone, just stalled. I have to find time to order 2 more balls of yarn from KnitPicks.com. I want it finished!

I guess I ought to review some more.

Comment! Lurkers! I know you’re there!

Tell me a joke.

More Sheep and Wool!

Well, there I was at Sheep and Wool. It was great! So exciting! So many sheep! So much wool! Also alpacas and llamas and all kinds of lovely things. First I will offer up…

sheep pictures!

Sheep show.

This was a cute sheep. =D

Aww!

Look, llamas!

They’re not looking at me, so I won’t look at them.

These are alpacas. They were all shorn!

Here I am knitting on the $1.50 sleeves. I ran out of yarn today in class. >.< Crap. Now I have to get more or figure out if my sleeves are wrong. Rawr.

I was at the Show Pavillion at 1 PM. Where were you, knitblogger? I saw Coleen later and she said she and Erin were there, but I didn’t see them. We must’ve missed each other. Coleen was wearing her very stylish Arwen sweater, which I admit I recognized before I recognized her. O_o

Oh look, I brought my mum along.

…And I met this sheep.

And now for loot goodies:

Dream in Color, Gaia Sock. This is intended Thuja socks for J’s father. Their family is taking me to Spain this summer (squee!) and in return they wanted socks.

Also Dream in Color, their “Smooshy” sock yarn in Dusky Aurora. =D I had to have it. This one’s for Monkey socks for J’s sister. Did I mention I’ve given up hope on finding another skein of that perfect Schaefer Anne, and will therefore be abandoning and frogging my 1.5 Monkey socks? Well, I will. But I love the pattern, and this yarn is beautiful, and I’ve already started knitting it (when I ran out of sweater yarn). Yay!

This one’s Oasis Yarns Seduction in Olive. It’s silk. Yum! I haven’t yet picked a project for this one (I’m thinking maybe Vinnland from the (new!) AntiCraft mag, or something simple like the Jaywalkers to show off the color. It’s lovely. It’s an olive green mixed with a darker green, and it’s very pretty.

Then I got this “Mystery Bump” of fiber. My mum bought it for me. ^_^ I’m going to practice spinning some more with the fiber I got from my LimenViolet Yarn Pr0n swap pal (thanks again Emily!) and then I’ll take this on. Excited!

And finally, I found these 4 beautiful Pewter buttons for my $1.50. They’re pretty, and they’re big enough. I love them already. =D

Also I love my camera’s macro setting.

And that was the day! Then I went home, did some work, puttered around, watched “A Man For All Seasons” about Thomas More, and went to bed. It was a good day.
